People write for THEMSELVES, surely, not for other people. That’s how you started writing solitaire, for yourself. Personally, I’m from a town where there are hardly any other people but white people, and I haven’t hardly been introduced to anyone of a different race because I live in a certain area. Does this mean I’m bad because I write white characters only, when white was all I grew up with — and white is what I picture when writing? NO. it’s just setting and circumstances of living.
'So white authors need to make a fucking effort and put the diverse characters in there.' OMFG. no they don't! They can do what they want and write what they want and they should think of themselves and what they're most comfortable writing with. I'm sure there are loads of books out there that have diversity in, but it just so happens to be that none of these are best-sellers, WOW who fucking cares. People take colour of skin in literature too fucking seriously *END QUESTION*
I don’t really understand what your problem is or why you’re arguing so hard against diversity in books. It’s like you want books to be all white straight people. I’m really confused why you would think something like that.
It’s weird that this issue annoys you so much, since you are white and privileged and it doesn’t affect you in the slightest.
You are white and privileged, and you haven’t come across many people from other races. That explains why you have these views. You can’t understand why people from other races would want to see their race in books.
'Who fucking cares' about diversity? People of colour do and white privileged people like me and you should care too and not just swan around being ignorant to the problems of our world. Please try to listen to what people other than yourself want from books - just because you, as a white person, do not desire to see a black or asian or whatever non-white race protagonist, doesn't mean that no one else does either. As authors, we write partly for ourselves, and partly to give to our readers. If you're writing solely for yourself, fine, go ahead, write all the white characters you want. But if you're going to put a book out there in the world where thousands of people will see it, you have a voice - and you need to use it to fight against discrimination. Why? Because it takes literally no effort at all to do it. Be a decent human being and care about the world around you, for God's sake.
